SCIAF is the official relief development agency of the Catholic Church in Scotland. We help people in the world's poorest places to lift themselves out of poverty, work together to protect our common home, and help people recover from disaster.
We're present in the most difficult places. We work with people in the hardest circumstances, so they can overcome their daily struggles and the structures of injustice that make and keep them poor. We work in partnership with local civil and church organisations, supporting communities across the world to bring about lasting change. We put pressure on governments to care for the planet and create a fairer, more peaceful world.
For more than six decades we've reached out to our global neighbours in need, irrespective of their race, religion or background, sustained by the generosity and love of Catholics in Scotland.

Hirit’s Story
“We used to walk five hours just to get water; the water was unsafe but we had no other choice. It felt like drinking that water was worse than dying.” Hirit, Ethiopia
In Ethiopia, conflict, climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic have destroyed the landscape, leaving communities struggling to find safe water and other basic needs. For Hirit, she would risk her safety every day to find water that often made her and her family ill.
However, SCIAF has been working with communities like Hirit’s in Ethiopia and around the world – digging wells and installing pumps. Now Hirit has access to clean water near her home, and the time she once spent walking to collect water she is now able to spend in school, completing her education.
Here are some of the ways your gift can help SCIAF with its vital work
1. A gift of £150 can provide skills training and counselling for vulnerable teenage mothers, as well as essential food and hygiene supplies, enabling them to secure an income for their family, giving mothers a bright future, and their children a chance to thrive.
2. A gift of £180 can provide families with a temporary home at their moment of greatest need, helping them endure crises until they are able to rebuild their lives.
3. A gift of £1,200 can help build wells and irrigation systems, and install rainwater collectors, providing families access to safe, clean water.
