Choose your Will Aid solicitor
Choose a solicitor from the list of participating firms and contact them to make an appointment. Be sure to book early and remember, if there isn't a local appointment available, you can find a solicitor who will be happy to arrange an appointment over the phone or via video chat. We have solicitors all over the UK taking part, so you can get the peace of mind a professionally-written Will can bring wherever you live.
Get everything ready
Use our Will Planner to prepare for your meeting. List your assets (property, possessions and money) and who you'd like to remember in your Will. The Jargon Buster explains some legal terms it’s helpful to to know.
Consider including a gift to charity in your Will
When writing your Will, loved ones come first. But many people also like to remember causes close to their heart. A gift in your Will of any size can have a huge impact, and also help reduce Inheritance Tax.
Legacies provide a significant amount of our Will Aid charities’ income each year. Without legacies, some wouldn’t be able to offer all the support that’s needed. Any gift in your Will, however large or small, will make a real difference to the work of your chosen charities.
Meet your solicitor
Your solicitor will offer either in-person appointments, or take your instruction via video call, or on the phone, or provide both options. Your Will Aid solicitor will then write your basic Will, waive their usual fee, and instead invite you to make an upfront donation to Will Aid.
Your chosen solicitor will talk you through the process and advise on how to best ensure your wishes are met. If you need additional services, such as advice on tax planning or the creation of trusts for instance, your solicitor will inform you of the costs of this additional work and you can decide whether you wish to proceed.
Consider your donation
Your solicitor will waive their normal fee for writing your basic will or pair of mirror wills and invite you to make a donation to Will Aid instead. You can make a cheque out to Will Aid and give it to your solicitor to pass on to us, or donate safely online. The suggested voluntary donation is £120 for a single Will or £200 for a pair of mirror Wills.
Approve your Will
Your solicitor will send you the Will to approve and any changes can be made at this point. Once you are happy with the document, you will need to sign it in the presence of two witnesses.
Keep it safe!
Your Will should be kept safely at home or your solicitor may offer to hold it in their strong room. Most importantly, don't forget to tell your family where it is.
Will Aid clients can register their Will for FREE with the Certainty National Wills Register using the code ‘willaid2025’ (usual cost £30 plus VAT per Will). This ensures that when the time comes, your beneficiaries can find out where your Will has been kept. For more information and to register a Will, visit www.nationalwillregister.co.uk
