Anyone who hasn’t got an up to date Will is urged to hurry to make an appointment with a local Will Aid solicitor (see list). These solicitors are offering an affordable way to put you affairs in order while raising money for charity. But this offer only lasts until the end of the month and many participating solicitors are already booking up fast, so you need to act quickly to take advantage of this opportunity.
Here’s how the scheme works: local participating solicitors will draw up a basic Will and, instead of charging a fee, will ask clients to make a donation to the Will Aid group of charities which help people in need in the UK and around the world. The suggested minimum donation is just £85 for a single Will, £125 for a pair of mirror Wills or £40 for a codicil (change) to an existing one. All the money donated is shared by nine of the UK’s best loved charities: ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, Sightsavers, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (N.I.).
Recent research has revealed that over half of the people in this area, like the rest of the country, don’t have a Will. When someone dies without a Will, their estate is distributed according to the laws of intestacy. This may cause hardship and distress for those they love and almost certainly will not produce the outcome the deceased would have wished for. It’s a great mistake to believe that a husband, wife or partner will automatically inherit if someone dies without a Will. The laws of intestacy are complicated and loved ones could end up with some nasty surprises.
Parents of young children need to have appointed Guardians should the worst happen, and anyone who has separated, married, divorced or had children should make sure their Will is up to date and reflects these changes.
Making a Will with Will Aid is easy – just contact a convenient participating solicitor to make an appointment. You will gain the reassurance of knowing that your Will has been prepared by an expert professional and the satisfaction of being able to help transform the lives of vulnerable people at the same time.
